Sorry I haven't posted for a few days -- we're gearing up here for our Opera Festival and things have been busy :)
Yesterday I found the time to stain the furniture for Mum's roombox. I had found a suggestion online that new, pale mahogany can be made to look like old, rich mahogany by using Minwax's Gel Stain in Brazilian Rosewood, so I got a little can and gave it a go.
This is with one coat of varnish, so they need to be sanded and varnished again, but I really like the colour! Now I have to pick a fabric for the chair ...
And I was playing with some of the new pieces I bought in England, so here's a picture of them on my William and Mary dresser!

At exactly this time, for the past two years, I've been elbow deep in
Advent Box kits, frantically rushing to complete 25 different themed kits.

The mahogany looks really good! And I love your dresser with all the blue and white stuff, it looks fab :)
ReplyDeleteThey look great! Ira's right the blue and white really looks wonderful on the dark dresser. So does all the pewter.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dresser! The contrasting colours are cool:) Mahogany furniture look so good:)
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job as usual. All the items you purchased in England are absolutely perfect ...
ReplyDeleteWhat are you preparing for the Opera Festival? How nice ...
That dresser is really beautiful I love it! Kate xxx
ReplyDeleteYou've finished these pieces wonderfully. I used linseed oil as McQueenie suggested. I've darkened my pieces now as I wanted them less red and more brown! lol

Thanks, guys -- I love the blue and white and pewter on the dark walnut, too :) I haven't even built the dolls house for this yet, and I'm already composing the room ...
ReplyDeleteAnd Michelle -- the first things I made from the McQueenie kits, the joint stools, I finished just as you did (and as the kits suggested) with linseed oil. I didn't like it, not for the Tudor period! That's why I decided to do something different this time! I'm still working on the aumbry, but I used an oak stain to tone down the red in the wood, and I think it's going to work out well.
The stained furniture looks terrific and I like the way your purchases suit the other piece as well. Well Done.

Great job with the furniture - varnish, yeah that's what I need on mine. I especially like the pewter pieces - very realistic!

The finish on the kit furniture is nice. I'm also looking forward to seeing what you do with your William and Mary property. I was going to ask about that but you pre-empted my question!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty dresser, Nina. Love the pewter ware!
